Question on Engineer Gobies and Deep Sand Beds

I have an engineer goby I would like to eventually move to a tank with a 6" plus, mature, deep sand bed.

There are signs of hydrogen sulfide in the bed, and I was wondering if there would be any possible dangers to the goby and future occupants from the sand bed being plowed around?

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Question on Engineer Gobies and Deep Sand Beds

If you are referring to Pholidichthys leucotaenia, then you may not have a problem. They will often just make a home under a rock, clearing out some space, rather than burrowing deep into the sand. Still, there is a range of behavior amongst these.

Re: Question on Engineer Gobies and Deep Sand Beds

Thank you for the post!

It is indeed a Pholidichthys leucotaenia, and enjoys moving sand around. Each time I look in the tank it has a mouthful of sand and is busy spewing it out of the rocks.

I'm thinking if I move its rock to the "cleaner" looking area of the sand bed, it will keep the gobi from stirring up too much trouble.
