Sand Selection

I am just getting re-started . I am planning a FOWLR system.

I had an aquarium when I was in college 28 years ago...it is amazing how the technology has changed. I have just bought my tank, a 24 gallon Nano-Cube. I am doing a lot of reading, thanks Lee for pulling all this together. What an amazing resource.

My question is....what type of sand should I buy? There seems to be lots of choices. I see info on live rock selection, but little info on sand selection.

There seems to be multiple particle sizes, with or without "mud". I even saw some at LFS with an expiration date

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Sand Selection

WELCOME TO REEFLAND!

For the size you are thinking about, I would not do a deep sand bed, nor one using mud. You should choose almost any substrate that you think looks attractive to you and fits in with your aquascaping. I would not recommend more than one small fish in that sized display, and that fish would not likely be a sand dweller, but if you want a fish which does borrow, then the substrate will need to be chosen to suit the fish.

Size, texture, and make up of substrate in a small system is pretty much optional with little to gain by choosing any one over the other, IMO.
