Re: one clown and one neon damsel

I have a Percula clown and a yellowtail damsel in my tank. I've read that the yellowtail is the least aggressive of all damsels. He picks on my clown a lot but has never hurt him. When I have to put my hand into the tank (which I try not to do) the damsel will come at my hand too. Once he rammed into it. Didn't hurt me but scared me. My husband laughed saying "Oh come one! It's just a little fish!", but when he's coming at me like he's a pit bull in fishy clothes!!!I would put the clown in first and let him get his own territory before putting in the damsel. If you have to put in the damsel first, before putting in the clown, move around your rock or decor so that the damsel has to find a new "territory". Also, make sure your tank is big enough for everyone to have their own territory. My tank is small, 29G but I plan on upgrading, soon I hope.

Re: one clown and one neon damsel

It all depends...

Is your neon damsel the "all blue" one? Reason I ask is one of the books I have says "neon damsel" next to the all blue one and the one that looks like my avatar pic.

I put two of the Javanese damsels (in my avatar) into my 46g from the beginning and the bigger of the two would chase the little one around a bit. However, now it's only if they get really close and irritate each other. Not as much as is used to be.

However, a few months later I put in the A. Percula clown and have never had a problem. The Javanese is supposed to be one of the more territorial of the damsels (didn't know it at the time I purchased them), but I haven't had one bit of a problem with them and my clown. Actually, it's kind of funny because the clown will hang out with the big Javanese like it's his big brother or something and it doesn't bother the Javanese at all. Has never gone after him once, that I've seen.

So, maybe I got lucky and everyone is cool with each other and I'm the exception...don't know.

HTH...

In a large tank most likely not...they may tango every now and then ...Damsel is a bit territorial when it finds a rock space it calls "MINE".

But its hit and miss..animals have there personalities.... I have a very strange Damsel...he hangs out with the black and tomato clowns near the anemone..

talk about playing with fire...but he really loves the clowns...and they swim and eat together...its very cool.

On the other hand I have a Blue yellow tail damsel that cares less for the Maroon in the same tank with him but they stay on opposing sides of the tank...

Damsels are cheap fish..i call them suicide starter fish ...just see what happens..if they dont mix..donate the damsel to a local store.
