Flow question

I had been running 2 modded maxijet 600's one at each end of my 55 gal, my first fish (2 percula clowns) came out of quarantine today and I had to unplug one of the 600's cause they didn't seem like they could keep up. There's is a maxijet 900 that is cycled on and off that is in the middle pointed at one end and a sump I don't know what the return pump is pushing though and a hot magnum. i could switch out any of the three for a couple maxijet 1200's I have around too.

They seem to be swimming ok with only one of the 600's running but the food that has been put in settled to the bottom pretty fast. So I guess I'm looking for some recommendations on which combination of pumps to go with and where to position them. ie should they be pointed across the tank as far as possible or at the rockwork or up at the surface...

You want to minimize dead spots in the display and have good surface movement for gas exchange. Every setup is different so it is hard to advise you how to position powerheads. I have four MJ 1200's situtated on the back glass aimed at the front glass. I have 2 Hydor Koralia model 4s on each side glass aimed directly at each other. In addition I have a Mag 18 return from the sump that empties into the display via four outlets aimed all different ways. This provides extremely turbulant flow and I love it. This is in a 75 gallon. The way I have these all aimed I don't believe I have many if any dead spots. Of course there are areas with less flow than others but I'm satisfied.

i tried the back glass pointed at the front for a while. Until I added sand it worked very well. with the sand there it just blows it down to glass pretty quickly.

New sand will blow everywhere. Sandbeds that have been established are less likely to move but you may still need to aim the powerheads towards far corners or something.
