I ordered an eel that is supposed to be a tesselatta eel. The eel that arrived has a tighter pattern(if that make since) not much white is showing like other tess eels I have seen. He is about 20" long and gorgeous but I am not sure what he is. I will try to post pics.
Is there a species of eels that look quite similar to the tess.
Gymnothorax favagineus (tesselated moray eel) is quite variable in color pattern based on size and habitat. Those in clear coral reefs usually have proportionally less black than those found in turbid waters. The spots appear to form a lattice pattern in juveniles but as they grow larger more of the white background shows and the spots become smaller.
I hope you realize that this is a large, aggressive eel. Maximum adult size is 10 feet.
