more questions wet/dry cleaning

I can't find any decent articles on "can you clean a wet/dry" so I figured I'd ask. Sorry for asking so many questions but just want to make sure. Can I clean the trickle filter on the wet/dry to get all the silt some the sand and other stuff out of it. I know the LR and the LS have the "good" bacteria in and the Bio balls in the wet/dry have it just didn't want to kill my cycled tanked my cleaning the trickle and the bottoms of the wet/dry. I was just concerned that the pump will eventually wear out from all the silt eating away and the gears and such.

Re: more questions wet/dry cleaning

There should be a inlet screen on any pump in the system according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The manufacturer knows what size particles to keep out of their pump.

As for cleaning, you can always rinse off/out the filter. The bacteria are really sticky and don't come off easily. Just rinse with (new or used) salt water at the sp. gr. of the water that moves through the filter. Any solids that settle can be vacuumed out (wet-vac) or siphoned out.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your concerns. If the above doesn't address them, please ask them again, differently.

Re: more questions wet/dry cleaning

Bio balls are nitrate factorys. And your equipment will collect nitrate and need cleaning. Instead of bio balls use rubble rock. Though a wet dry isnt needed at all.
