I would imagine that the wrasse has a natural protection against the parasites.

Save your money on the clearer wrasses. They will more than likely die in the first week or two. A better bet would be a couple of neon gobies or cleaner shrimp. They both do just as good of a job and have a much better survival rate and you can usally find them readilly captive bread or tank raised.

Also the neon goby, along with several other gobies and blennies don't get the parasites. It's nature's way of taking care of its own health care workers.
(Yes, leave the cleaner wrasses in the ocean. And even if you find one for sale at the lfs, don't buy it. It only encourages the lfs to order more. I think you already know this, but it's good to keep harping on it).

I have had a cleaner wrasse for 8 months and he is doing great. He is fat from the food and cleans all my fish. No problem with it at all.

I've got to agree with Fishrule. We have had no problems with our cleaner wrasses. The first died in the process of changing cc to dsb. The holding tank we put him in was a little too cool. Up until then he was fine as is our second one. They both eat frozen foods and flakes. I've often heard they die because they run out of a food source. I also like the fact that he swims around. Gobies and blennies don't. I like to see fish all over the tank not just scurring along the bottom. Maybe the cleaner shirmp would clean the wrasse.

OK let me put it another way. The ones you got are what is left that survived from the LFS. I work part time at a LFS and every time they order cleaners 3 out of 4 die in the first week and over half that are sold to customers die in the following week. We dont order them any more unless spefically asked for because we just loose money and the fish die just like we dont order butterflies or morish idoles.

Tendar, then it seems like they die from the transit/shipping. But once they get acclimiated/adjusted from the trip they do ok.

I have had two in the past they both ate great as long as i had them.
one jumped out and the other disappeared. however i have another for about 2 months and he was pretty fat when i got him but is extremely thin. my raccoon usually has ample parasites to pick at. the wrasse does not seam that interested in other food offerings as much as the others I have had. |
