honeycomb eel

So I am fascinated by eels. My favorite is the honeycomb. I have done research and they are probably the most aggresive of all eels and get quite big. However, they are hardy and relatively easy to maintain (from my understanding). Nevertheless, I would like to own one. I am willing to set up a species only tank, however I don't know what will work. They say a minimum of 180 gallons for it since it can grow 5'. Due to the jump in price margin between a 180 and a 125 will a 125 work. At least for sometime? Thanks.

They grow fast and are a dangerous (to humans) marine lifeform. The 180 is understated in my opinion. I think it would be more appropriate to start with the tank you will need at the Eel's full length, that is a 240g to 300g aquarium. They are secretive and will hide much of the time. So you need to be sure this is what you want.

It is known to grow to over 6 foot long in captivity when fed and nourished properly.

I would not want you to fall into the trap of thinking, 'I'll buy it a bigger tank later,' because that 'later' will come very fast, and the 'bigger tank' will cost a lot more. Best to spend the money once.

Thanks lee, after you put it in those terms I guess it would be foolish to spend 3-$4000 on a tank for just one eel. Especially since they aren't that enjoyable to watch unless feeding.
