New porcupine puffer and questions?
I bought a porcupine puffer for my 90gallon yesterday..Just wodnering if anyone has nay info on them. eating, habits, etc..and expierences..The guy I know att he lfs has been feeding him live brine and frozen krill...He kinda just hung out in the corner of my tank for about 5-6hours eysteray then got really active skimming everywhere going in my yellows tang territory and causing a ruckus..It was actually kinda funny everythign in the tank seems to be kinda afraid of him..hes about 3"long maybe 3.5",,Dan

hey Dan,
I really miss having a porc. puffer in my tank. They remind me of dogs. Anyway, I can recall my puffer doing fine on krill and silversides. But to give it variety I gave it gold fish occasinally. It seems that I spoiled it and gold fish would be the only thing it would take after that. I also noticed that it would puff up more during the evening hours. Be prepared to having it grow at an incredible rate! You'll really be entertained by your puffer! G |

thats cool dan ,my 110 fowlr has been set up for about 2 months-3 months and i still have no fish in there just a sallylf and green brittle star hermits/snails,but a puffer is high on my list of fish, they are so cool.i have a freind that has one and he feeds it all kinds of meaty foods.i think youre supposed to feed them shelfish with the shells still on to keep the beak from growing too long.i know my buddy throws shrimp in there with the shell still on.where did you pick him up at ,out of curiosity?

here is what i have learned. i just got one for my 90 tank today. he is so cool
they are nocturnal and have great night vision and like to hunt food at night like caves and rocks to hide behind are suseptible to ich are considered not reef safe cause they will eat up your inverts likemeaty foods should not be fed goldfish. they are to high in fat need to be fed a live snail or crab or shrimp small enough for them to eat every now and then. they need this to file down there teeth if not they get to long and can burrow into there lips. there skin is venemous japanese people eat them as a sushi aphrodisiac. if not prepared right it will kill you. can grow to about 6-10 inches in captivity many owners have taught them to be pet like dogs once they learn you are the hand that feeds them they get very excited when you aproach the tank... thats what i have learned good luck with your fish |

Eventually, you should be able to get him to take krill or other shrimp/squid pieces right out of your hand. I used to have one (along with a zebra eel) hand trained when I usd to work at the LFS. , they are really neat fish.
