    movin on up...75 to 180

    Hello all,
I re-started my 75 perfecto that I have had for 25 if not more yrs. Tank filled on 03Feb09. Tank substrate used was crushed coral. Before was dolamite to keep ph in chk (lfs advice). Chose crushed coral before any reading. The 75 is up and running w/ rufugium, skimmer, magnum HOT used for flow and polishing water. Have also Eheim 2229 moved to 180 to help clear water. Power heads 2@ 1200 GPH rating. Live rock about 85#'s.
In this tank (75) are 3-squammi anthis (juvenile) 2-flame hawks (acquired as pair) blonde tang (eats algae from my fingers) 1-blk/wht damsel, bicolored blenny and a bullseye jawfish (the flash). 2-emerald crabs (growing fast) nassa...snails blk shell & wht/beige shell and (sorry now after reading) Mex turbo snails.
The 180 was a running system w/ sand on the bottom and live rock (70 #'s appx.) When tank was p/u there was a snowflake eel still in tank removed at this time to go to the owners friend. Only water kept was in 5 gallon buckets covering rock and sand. The sand rock and water was placed into tank w/ 2 new Kora #4 pow/hds and the 2 from 75 will be added when switch is complete. The tank has been running appx 2 wks w/ no ammonia or nitites. nitrate @ 20 ppm.

How do I proceed from this point on. Kinda nervous about the complete switch.

Thanks for the advice from the old time newbie.

Set up the 180 again following this procedure: Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium

You'll put all the rock, water, landscaping into the 180, run the equipment for a couple of weeks then pick up the above process at step number 16. only less time is needed (maybe 4 weeks at this stage).

    Hi Lee,
Thanks for the advice. I've been reading that 1-2" of sand for the bottom. I (We) have the bullseye jawfish. How should I overcome the substrate depth with a fish that likes to burrow. My crushed coral is 4-5" deep.
    Thank You,
    Kevin

Many of the Jawfish don't really burrow straight down. Most bury at an angle. When they 'hit' the glass/plastic bottom, they go even more horizontal. 2" can work out with a very young Jawfish.

However, if you want the deep sand bed, you'll just have to be aware of its problems, needs, and how to manage it. Nothing wrong with it, just not recommended for the new person in the hobby.
