Others may have different opinions, but I believe no 'Ray' should be kept in the home aquarium. So to me, there should be problem -- as long as the Ray is left in the sea.
Hello how are you guys doing?? Im new to aquarium keeping and know that Im probably going to be told by you guys not to get the Ray, but if I was able to. Would he be alright with my Black Volitan of about 5" and would the Ray even be safe in a 90 gallon????? The tank has been setup for about 6 months now and I just have the Volitan and a paired couple of Gold stripe Maroons, oh yeah as well as a dozen red legged hermits. I have no live rock, but two nice big lace rocks with all sorts of caves and hiding spots! I know its only a matter of time before my Lion trys to eat the male Clown and eventually the female but I plan on moving them into a 32 gallon nano, hopefully for breeding too!!!! Basically I want to accomplish a sweet predator tank, I want my Volitan,Blue-ringed Ray,a Zebra Eel, and maybe a Porcupine Puffer. I know with the Eel and Puffer that crustaceans are out but thats alright. I just want these four beautiful animals! My Volitan is eating silverslides from my tongs and enjoys the occasional fresh squid and crab snacks, I haven't fed him goldies in a while and I miss the vaccuming show, would it mess up his routine of prepared food if I gave him the occasional live goldie??? So Thanks and sorry to spew so much at one time!!!!

The only guy I know of who kept one of those rays for any length of time had a 1700-gallon aquarium with open sand bed completely surrounding the live rock just for the ray. He doesn't have the ray anymore. I don't know what happened to it. I just know that it didn't show up in the fish list or any of the photos when his tank was selected as Tank of the Month on another board.
I don't know why they sell those things to hobbyists.
Anyway,

Do NOT feed freshwater feeder fish (goldfish, guppies, etc.) to lionfish. It will cause fatty deposits in their liver, resulting in early death.

Ofcourse not all the time with the goldfish, I would even go as far as feeding him damsels or something! I just miss the live feeding, I got him off of live less than a month of having him, no he is eating frozen preperations!!! Well I guess the ray is out of the question!! I was wondering if these animals would coexist without hurting or killing each other??
1.my Volitan Lionfish
2.Porcupine Puffer
3.Purple Reef Lobster
4.Chocolate Chip Starfish
5.Lawn Mower Blenny
6.maybe a nice size Horseshoe Crab
Would those particular inverts be safe with my volitan as well as the puffer?? And could you suggest maybe one or two more fish. Im going for unique and predatory, I was considering a panther grouper but they get too big. And would the Blenny be safe in there???? Oh yeah would the puffer nip at my volitan's fins???? Sorry for the overload of questions, but I appreciate the help!!!!!! Thanks for the advice!!!
