Asking about fish collection, cyanide, etc...

Has anybody asked their LFS about the channels they acquire their fish through?

I want to find out if the fish I'm looking at were caught using harmful techniques like cyanide, but can't imagine how to phrase this to:

    1. not come across in an accusing manner.
    2. get a truthful answer that is believable, or confirm-able.
    3. not get the stink-eye any time I visit the LFS afterward.

Also, what is the likelihood that such info can be actually be known by the LFS? Are they in the dark as much as the customers, because the fish change hands on the way to LFS's?

And LFS's aside, is there any way to get such information about online fish retailers?

The best way is to avoid fish that may have been collect using this very destructive method by is knowing the origin or country the fish came from. Some countries are worse then others.

The Philippines is notorious for using cyanide, but they have gotten better. Indonesia is also pretty bad. This is not only a problem with the fish being caught for the Aquarium industry, but with "food" fish.

If your local fish store is selling fish that you know are from these countries, don't buy the fish (and let them know why)...if people don't buy the fish, the pet store will be forced to supply you with better environmentally friendly caught fish. Its all about supply and demand. It s a trickle down effect. It starts with you (us ). Ask for MAC certified fish. Fish that have been caught with safe and non destructive methods, that are handle and cared for in a proper manor.

    1. The LFS won't know for sure so they shouldn't take it as an accusation. If you're asking a wholesaler, they are used to the question and shouldn't offense.

    2. Low probability of something you yourself can confirm; no probability of getting a correct answer if they were collected using cyanide and the LFS knows it.

    3. Find another LFS that is sure of their answer.

Actually, asking is pretty much not going to get you anywhere. There are some areas of the world still prone to cyanide catching which include non Hawaii Pacific areas.

Usually such fish die in a few months or at least under a year. If you aquarium is set up with proper quality, environment, and fishes are fed with proper nutrition and properly acclimated to captive life, then more the most part they live beyond the year when not cyanide collected.
