Question Clown Fish, russel lion fish, tangs?!?!?!?!?!?

Do clown fish school? If not what do you recommend for a school of fish?

A russel lion fish is smaller then the vilotan lionfish, will it eat the clown fish?

Which tang you suggest is best?

What do you have in your tank now?

Lionfish are known for eating things that can fit in their mouth. If you want clowns, chromis, anthias, etc, I would skip the Lionfish.

What is the best Tang for you? What size is your tank?

LiveAquaria.com is a good online source of info and requirements for livestock.

All depends on the size of your aquarium.

Keep in mind that fish in the wild school as a defensive behavior in the presence of predators. They may discontinue their schooling behavior in a home aquarium if there are no predators and they feel secure.

All lionfish will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouths. And they all have large mouths.

Which tang you suggest is best?
Depends on the size of your aquarium.

You can't put any tang in a 37-gal tank. Sorry.

No fish yet? How long has your tank been up and running? Has it had its ammonia and nitrite spikes yet?

If you put fish in too soon, they are going to die, or at best suffer needlessly.

A lot of Tangs will fight in the same tank. But at 37 gallons, you really shouldn't be looking at any Tangs, unfortunately. Most Tangs do best with larger tanks, preferably 6 feet long.

Try looking here for a few days, and come up with a plan before heading to your LFS:

Saltwater Fish: Marine Aquarium Fish for Saltwater Aquariums

If you go to your LFS without a plan, you will almost definitely wind up with the wrong fish for your tank, or for any long term stocking plan you might have had.

At 37 gallons, a peaceful tank with smaller (and compatible) inhabitants would be a good plan.

So, how long has your tank been running, and what is your ultimate stocking list of fish?

You really want to reconsider. A week is far from ready. Unless there is something special about your tank, it will go through ammonia and nitrite spikes, before these settle back to 0. We're talking over a month away before it is ready.

Patience is the #1 rule for saltwater... and no time like now to start. Those spikes are toxic.

    Some batfish need huge tanks:

    Teira Batfish

Your best bet is to decide on a list of fish, and purchase only those that the 37 will accommodate. When you get the bigger tank, buy the others. Too many things can happen between now and then, and all of a sudden you have a fish that wants at least 180 gallons, stuck in a 37 gallon tank.

And don't let the Tangs fool you. Even juveniles need a long stretch of tank to be free of stress.

If you're serious about the hobby, and want to have success and healthy fish, definitely pick up this:

Find A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes: 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species 1999 Scott W. Michael 1890087386 9781890087388 - Direct Textbook

It will help you choose the right livestock for your tank, and let you know which species are the most difficult to keep.

    Good luck!

That's more of a "bio load" rule. And it's not that simple unfortunately. Fish come in all shapes and sizes. Some tall, some wide, etc.

The result is different bio loads for different fish. A "fat" fish (trigger) will produce a lot more waste than a skinny fish (dartfish) of the same length.

And depending on your system, you may need to be very careful about your bio load. Overstocking a tank with no protein skimmer for example is a very bad idea.

Some fish also prefer a more peaceful surrounding, or are very territorial. All of these play a factor when determining how many fish to put in a tank.

As far as compatibility, putting some fish together is like putting a cat and hungry dog in the same room.

For example, a Lionfish will eat things that fit in its mouth. So a Lionfish is not compatible with a clown.

You want to be better informed buggzy regarding stocking limits. This is a good post to put things into perspective. Please read this closely: Fish Stocking Limit - for FO and FOWLR

Re: Clown Fish, russel lion fish, tangs?!?!?!?!?!?

Consider re-searching the fish you want more, in a 37 gallon , dont put tangs.
No, one week isn't even enought time for the cycle to begin, thats why the tests are "fine", you will want to wait AT LEAST one month, if not more.
In a 37 gallon tank, a good thing would be to put clown fish, and maybe a dwarf angel fish. Those are beautyfull , perfect fish for that size tank.

    You know they did.

buggzy702, your tank is not ready. I don't know if you have LR or not but you have probably not put anything in your tank to start the nitrogen cycle, that's why the tests show everything is ok and there not. If you don't know what the nitrogen cycle is you better find out. Your tank isn't big enough for a tang, I have a 50g and would like to have a tang but it is not big enough either.

You know you better do what your girlfriend wants or your in the doghouse.

He did, clown, Batfish, and a damsel. He posted about them not eating flake or pellets.

He's an idiot. Doesn't he know Batfish will grow to approx. 24", bigger than his tank. He should be tied to a pole and shot and shot again if he's still alive.
