    Mappa Puffer update and video

I have upgraded him from the 90g to this 180 and administering a copper bath before adding live-rock and decor. With 3,600 gph pump, 60 gallon sump and 20 gallon wet/dry skimmer combo, I believe my crew will be happy for a while. The Undulated Trigger will likely go soon due to not finding any success stories on them.

Nice vid, and beautiful fish. That puffer is huge.

How long have you had them?

    Good looking FO tank Mappa.
I agree that traffic has slowed considerably even since I joined. Its a shame because I think Reefland is much better than the "big one". Hopefully, more people join so this place can be more of a community rather than a small family type. There's great people here but it would be nice to see more.

This site is without a doubt better put together and very user friendly. I believe the tough love attitude might be the culprit. Though good if you want exact, great advice, I think Lee is a little harsh. A learning lesson on telling it like it is I guess.

I actually prefer the "tell it like it is" method. No sugar coating, straight to the point, solid advice (not just from Lee but other members and mods as well) has helped me come a long way in a relatively short time without having to sift through less than ideal (or flat out wrong) information.

I am semi new to saltwater, dont know the other site you guys are talking about. But, so far ive seen passionate hobbiests sharing their experiences and knowledge. I like the tell it how it is attitude and the honesty.

Sometimes, the ignorance and inablilty to listen to the more experienced destroys the quality of life.

    Oh and awesome vid.

This is a great site. My only gripe is how people are continually pointed to stickies. IMO, the abundance of research in the stickies is great, but always pointing (new) people to them, in lieu of open forum Q and A, really discourages communication.

That is what I am getting at. A forum is designed as social structure with information sharing as the root. Those higher educated can teach others. If they don't understand learning curves in some, they should take it as a way to be a better teacher. Granted, some are really stupid and at the cost to living animals and this needs to be considered. I don't know where I am going with on this ha ha, gotta get going for now.

    I can respect that.
But the stickies are an excellent way to avoid the redundancy of common questions. I gave up explaining the cycling process for new tanks after about the 3rd or 4th time. It's much easier (and I think more productive) to point people to the right information, rather than retyping explinations and possibly forgetting important information. My $0.02

Re: Mappa Puffer update and video

    I agree and I don't.

If someone were to ask a very specific question, I doubt that they would be pointed to a sticky. Personally, I enjoy opening up a dialogue for something a question with a clearly defined scope, and I think that's the case with most users here.

A lot of the traffic through here tends to be first timers that are (sometimes painfully) obviously in need of just learning the basics, and I think the stickies serve that purpose well.
I don't always have time (and I have more than most) to rewrite my own versions of basic fundemental processes and methodologies. Don't get me wrong, I've done it...many times, in fact.
Ultimately, I think the OP's are better served to be shown how to help themselves. Once they are up to speed on the subject matter, it's a lot more rewarding for everyone to get into discussions on the finer points.

Re: Mappa Puffer update and video

I agree, the pointed to generalized threads are good for the newbies. Sometime I think the Saltwater hobby and understanding of care greatly ranges compared to freshwater or say Reptile & Amphibians. So the "my way is the only way" attitude, or this thread answers all can apply only sometimes as an open thread allows a respectable debate on the topic. I am more on the side to agree with those offering more for the fish as to space and requirement as Lee usually advocates. There are some things I don't always agree with, so feel when looking for input, it might to be from others with their experiences and not a scolding.
A good example, I really want to hear about experiences with Undulated Triggers and not the safe answer of "they kill everything". So I ask the noobish sounding question even after reading every article I can find under a google search in hopes that I dig up newer information, like that 1 in a million guy who had a 10 inch Undulated with a Batfish, Lionfish and a cat shark for the last 8 years.
The point is, some come on here to chat and ask stupid question. Sometimes we are in a hurry to type before work, food etc. But we still want this to be a welcome community. If people are leaving, there is a problem and it should be addressed. Some might say "don't let the door ..." but it is those new users who pick another forum that makes them feel welcome and that other forum grows. We all know the power of people/visitors when it comes to websites and forums. So if this is to work, there has to be more tactful ways to "tell it like it is".

The thread seems to have finished discussing the original topic. If you'd like to continue the dialoge of how the Forum is operated or how others are helped, please start a new thread.
