Lighting a fish-only setup?

I'm a little confused. I know corals and invertebrates need special lighting Like T5 HO to grow but in a fish-only aquarium what is required? T5 HO with daylight and actinic? Compact Flourescent? To be honest I want my future fish healthy but i don't want to spend $300 on a light. What light do you recommend? Do LED lights do anything beneficial for fish or they just look pretty? I like to shop on Amazon and
eBay so anyone who can link some products on there will bey new favorite friend . (the nearest saltwater store is 40min away...)

This is a case where less is more. Most FO systems tend to create high nutrient water conditions. That's not a problem for fish, but if you add lots of high intensity lighting to the mix, you're going to end up with horendous algae issues.
Even if you're talking about a FOWLR, you still don't need intense reef lighting to get that nice purple coraline growth. It doesn't need much to thrive. A single power compact bulb is more than adequate.
