    90g / triggerfish question

Currently setting up 90g (bought on Craigslist) saltwater FOWLR. Just finished removing the calcium off Tank/skimmer/refugium. Currently I am in the process of disinfecting with bleach. Goal: 3 Triggerfish... Possibly the slower growers such as bursa, lunula and huma/Picasso. What do you think?

IMO, a 90g might be able to house 1 of those fish (whichever has the smallest adult size) but not all three. And as long as there are no other fish. Confined spaces can cause aggression issues and overall health decline. The bio load of all three could be an issue as well. I don't know enough to be sure of my evaluation though but I don't think I'm far off.

Your going to need a big mechanical filter for these messy boys. Also, they may get along, they may not. It all depends on the fish themselves. They may chase each other around til death. I've seen other Triggers do this, but you just never know. The'll eat your CUC also.

It came with a refugium and protein skimmer. I'm gonna purchase carbon, UV, approx 40lbs of live rock and a reactor. All to maintain the bio load. What do you guys think?

You don't need a UV unit. Don't know how much that refugium is gonna help either. In my experience using like a large canister filter to remove the waste from these boys worked pretty good. I used an Ocean Clear Canister with a Micron Filter and a 1500gph return pump. Water was always crystal clear.

You're going to hear a lot of different opinions, but for the most part, refugiums are now a widely accepted and used method of natural nutrient export, (in the reefing community) and they have the added benefit of providing a safe haven for pods and other zooplankton's proliferation. This gives you a sustainable and renewable source of food for certain fish, and most corals.
In order for a macroalgael refugium to have a substantially positive impact on reducing nitrates and phosphates, it needs to be quite large in relation to the display tank, especially if it is to be the only method of nutrient export. (besides water changes). Most of the experts opinions I've read on this say it should be at least as large as the display tank, but there aren't many of us actually going to that extreme for obvious reasons. So is it worth it to incorporate a refugium if you can only dedicate 1/4 of the DT volume or less? This is where the old school gets skeptical about the whole thing, but in my limited experience, yes it is worth it...the effect on zooplankton alone is worth it in a reef, and even if your small chaetomorpha culture only puts a dent in pulling out nutrients, any help in that department is worth it.

I'm not a fan of the idea of using UV in reef tanks because of the negative effect it has on zooplankton.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
