need an opinion...

Hey i currently have a 20 gallon freshwater tank and was considering turning it into a quarantine tank for my soon to arrive saltwater tank.
Should i? What would i have to do to make the transformation?
it currently has:
no fish
gravel
a fake log tunnel
and fake plants on the back and side of the tank
I know a lot of quarantine tanks have no decorations and no gravel to monator the feeding habits, swimming habits, etc.
would i need to clean out all decorations and gravel?

It depends on what kinds of marine life you want to keep. You posted this in the Saltwater (Fish-Only) Forum so I would guess you want to keep fish. If this is true, use the 20 gallon tank as a quarantine tank and buy the largest tank you can afford and can afford to maintain.

The 20 gallon tank will house less than about 3" of fish. After all the inside things you put into it and the fact that you don't fill it full, you'll have less than 16 gallons of water. One small or two very small fishes is about all you'll comfortably fit in there.

However, the 20 gallon can make for an interesting REEF tank with invertebrates in it.

Very sorry fish are friends. I just re-read your post and realize I answered a 'different question.'

That tank should be setup like given in this sticky, for a quarantine tank: A Fish Quarantine Process

The tunnel and plastic plants may all work IF they are suitable for salt water. Many of the freshwater articifical plants are anchored with lead. This would not be what you want to use in the QT. Arrange the decorations so that you can still eye-ball the fish when you want. The best decorations for marine QTs are made out of resins, and then best when cleaned and aged a bit.\

The tunnel is a good idea IF (noted above it is suitable AND) it is the proper size. A marine fish will use the tunnel or PVC pipe or any such cover IF it can expand it fins and still be inside the decoration. Some hobbyists offer decorations that are too small for their fish.
