    Do I need LR?

    Hi everybody

I’m still collecting the items/tools/equipments for my 1st trying with saltwater fish tank

However, I have so far 55g tank/skimmer/DIY wet/dry filter/heater/chiller/ and some test tools digital PH tester/ ammonia and nitrate test kit

Umm.. what else ? 5 tubes fluorescent 25W each..

I know anemone is hard to keep , but I’m insisting to try it (later at least) when I have good knowledge and experience with water parameters/changes process

Well.. I’m looking for clownfish, and (later ) anemone, DO I NEED LIVE ROCK during cycling the water? Or later? What if I don’t get any? Can I still keep anemone?

What I know the LR are excellent biological filter, but are they important to keep anemones??

The second question is , what is the maximum clownfish can I keep in my 55g tank , ( mostly 50G + decoration )

I know sure Mr leebca has covered this topic somewhere in the forum, but I don’t know where.

    Thanks for your help

    Regards

    Re: Do I need LR?

These are some references to stocking for you to review, if you want details:
Fish Stocking Limit - for FO and FOWLR
    and
What Size Tank is Right for That Fish?

Remember, that as the Anemonefishes get older they will want to mate/pair up. The pairs will defend their nesting area and there will be a lot of tension/fighting in a tank full of Anemonefishes. You might want to consider just choosing the one kind you like the most and put in two of those (sized properly for mating) and other fishes that will get along with them. Then that pair will 'own' the Anemone(s) you add.

Regarding live rock. Keep in mind that 40 years ago we didn't use LR at all. It can be done. But there are several advantages to the use of LR. Have you read this post?
What is Live Rock, Anyway? To specifically answer your question, LR is not needed for keeping Anemones. Anemones produce very little nitrogen wastes, which is what the LR is good at handling.

You will need to have good circulation and decorations that will provide sites for bacteria to set up biological filtration. You will probably still need some sort of additional biological filtration -- like a canister filter with biological filtration media. But much of this will depend on how stocked the aquarium will be. The less the stocking, the less biological filtration you will need.

Have you read through this post?
Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium Of course this is info with LR, but it also contains much of the other equipment information you are looking for.

For help with maintaining and caring for Anemones, post in the Reef Aquariums Forum.

This link takes you to a list of links of various topics on marine aquariums and fish husbandry. Check it out:
    Table/Contents - Link List

Ask if you have other questions, but do go through the above information. I could repeat much of it here, but I might miss some detail. The details are there. Good luck!
