    Cown Triggerfish friends ?

I'm getting ready to cycle my 125G for my clown triggerfish .. So far he will be the only one in there ..

I understand the clown triggerfish is not invert safe or reef safe , but I was wondering what I can put in the tank to help eat the Algae that will inevitably grow ..

Or am I stuck scraping the tank forever ? right now the tank is just filled with water and 30lbs rock with more rock to come ...

Throw in the normal snails and hermits, he will of course try to get them, but he won't eat them all. I have a few Emeralds that hide pretty well, and some of my big Turbo Snails my Trigger leaves alone.

    Wow really ? That's good to know ... .

I was just reading a thread on another forum of a person who said his Clown Trigger ate all his hermits and snails everytime he puts them in ...

Would you say he eats half of them ? or almost none ?

All fish have different personalities. I did have to shoo the Trigger away when I put in the snails and hermits, as he tried to pick them off while they were flaoting down.

The type of Triggerfish you have will grow more and bold and (bored) with time. It will enjoy hunting down the crabs. You might want to consider a large sand sifting Goby. There are two common ones, but the one I'd recommend would be Cryptocentrus pavoninoides which is NOT known for strewing the substrate all over the place. BUT this depends on what kind and size substrate already there. Had you asked this before setting the system up, you could have chosen the right substrate to accomodate this Goby.

Anyway, the Goby would take care of the substrate. After that, scraping will still be needed.

What kind of substrate do you recommend for the bluespotted goby ?

    Re: Cown Triggerfish friends ?

This Goby scoops up the substrate and sifts through it. The substrate passes into the mouth and much of it comes out the gill plates. The larger the Goby the large the bits of substrate it can handle. If you get a relatively older/larger one, then the average (NOTE this is average) size of the substrate particle should be no more than 2mm with a 1.5 to 3mm range. A young/smaller Goby is best with an average of about 1.5mm and a range of 1.0 to 2.0mm. Any average particle size or less and a smaller particle size range is suitable.

The kind of subjstrate can be wide and varied, although I would not recommend crushed coral or substrate with sharp edges to it. They can handle this in the wild, but in captivity, they sometimes cause a problem that the captive fish doesn't handle well.

This fish is put through quarantine and trained to eat prepared food in the water column. When released into the main tank, it will do its sifting and supplement its food with the prepared foods you add. However, it is a relatively lay-back fish and won't compete well with the Triggerfish (like most fish won't) so you'll need to get food down to it using a feeder pipe/baster-type device. They should be fed three times a day so they don't lose weight.
