Blue Tang with a swollen eyelid

Hi, I'm new to the forum so here goes:

last friday I noticed my blue tang was strangly absent from the scenery, being the dominant fish in the tank. Only on saturday I found him wondering about in the back between the rocks with a gigantic swollen eye: the complete lid is grey and even the area where the eye meets the forehead seems larger than usual.

All waterparameters are correct. Only problem I'm having is a failing skimmer: I think the pump is seizing up. It keeps going into thermal safety lock indicating the coils are going. There is no obstruction for the impeller to turn. This is the second failing pump on this type so I've bought an entirely new skimmer yet to be installed.

Back to the issue: there's no nitrite, nitrate, phosfate, ammonia... The other fish are fine. The blue tang is not showing itch.

I've got a large amount of corals and catching is but impossible. What is the best way to go about this.

I'm hoping to get some good tips because he's my favourite and an absolute beauty. It would be a shame to loose him.

    Fozzy.

Sounds just like he smacked himself on a rock to me. Should heal up in quick order. If the other eye were to look the same way I pull him and treat for Pop Eye. Only if the other eye gets the same way. If it does not, then he just bumped himself.

lMore than likely, it's an injury. However, I am concerned about the thing with the skimmer. When the organic levels increase, so do the numbers of bacteria in the system. It is easy in this kind of situation for a fish to get an infection from an injury. Get the skimmer working properly.

Watch the fish closely. If it doesn't begin to show signs of improvement within two days or if at anytime it looks worse, move the fish to a quarantine tank and treat with an antibiotic that goes through the fish's skin. I would suggest using Maracyn Two for Saltwater fishes, though Maracyn Two for freshwater fishes will work, also. If you have to dose this, use twice the recommended amount that you will find in the instructions the come with the med.

Re: Blue Tang with a swollen eyelid

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've just started up the new skimmer and its already producing foam.
The eye already seems improving: I've put in a product against common infections and anti-swelling for saltwater applications
Also I'm getting to comprehend the lay-out of this forum, so I'll try to post new threads in the right place, thanks fo the tip Lee
