These three fish together???

How would these fish do in a 155 gal. bowfront FOWLR...Niger Trigger, Hippotang and a Lion fish. All pretty much the same size. I'd like to add a puffer to the list but don't think the tank is big enough...?

I'm not sure about Niger triggers, are they the black ones with huge fins? I know triggers in general will chew off a lions spines. As will puffers. I am pretty sure that a Niger is the most peaceful trigger and wil be fine but I would avoid the puffer.

I don't think your combo should pose any problems. Niger Triggers are pretty docile (for triggers)

Your fish shoulb be fine together even with the puffer for that size tank. It really all depends on the personality of the fish. Ive seen puffers that get along with every one and ive seeen ones that kill every one but that goes will lions too. Most are easy going but every once in a while you get a bad one that hates the world and lets everyone know it.

i wouldnt be afraid to add the puffer to the list,as long as youre willing to keep up the water changes and youre filtration is up to standard.then again sometimes less is more(freedom) .

Thanks! I heard triggers, puffers and lions (OH MY!) are messy eaters. I know Triggers and inverts dont mix but I wonder if a few snails and large cleaners would be ok?

Hi:
I have had this combo before and if all the fish are similar sized it should work fine.

Niger triggers (as well as pinktailed, blue cheeks,) are mellow, fairly passive fish. There only requirements is good hiding holes, and particularly one spot they will defend.

When you say lion...what type do you mean? a Volitans? a antennata, dwarf???
i ask this becuz this will dicatate if one of the other fish might be food. A P volitans may quickly outgrow all your tankmates, and could possible eat one of them, and of course a lion will also limit your ability to introduce new fish(as they will also be food).

W/ that said. i would skip puffers right now, as puffers are notoriuos fin nippers and i have seen puffers chew on the fins of one of my volitans(it was a dogface).

w/ this mix of fish , snails and large hermit crabs will be fine. The niger will leave these guys alone and the lion will sample them once or twice, but not make a common meal out of them. A puffer or rhinocanthus trigger(like picasso, humas, clowns) will eat all of these. i personally use goatfish, and starfish as my cleanup crew.
If you want lionfish info email me directly, i've got a lionfish info sheet w/ lots of husbandry tips

Thanks Frank, I'm not sure what Lionfish to buy. Recomend one?? The tank has about 140 lbs. of LR and a 4-6" sand bed. About adding more fish...I dont think I would, I dont like a full tank and with the Tang I would like to be sure he had some room to move. I'll email ya for that Lion info... Thanks

Hi:
As far as getting the lionfish info, please email me directly. I'll send it to your email addy.

About the lionfish.
I believe the pictures show a few of my lions
I have a P Volitans (in brown) a P Miles(in black), a D. Biocellatus(fu man chu lion in orange), and D. Brachypterus (dwarf fuzzy in yellow). The dwarf fuzzy is my rarest and coolest fish. The full yellow morph is extremely rare and comes from japan. I got him 3 yrs ago, i believe i paid right around $350. They do occasionally show up in pet stores.
Whats not seen is the P.radiata, and P. Sphex.

i have plenty of info on the dwarfs, and its in the infosheet. Too much to write here
hope this helps

Chromis:
Thats a green wolf eel. While its called an eel its actually a pseudochromis. These fish show up in the LFS every once in awhile. Great fish, but w/ severe limitations. This eel, will attempt to eat every fish in the tank, they will physically mouth every fish tail first, and if they think they can swallow it, they'll try.
They grow to about 18" long and thick like a bike tire. Preety cool, but as it got big it would pot shot my fish...thats a no-no when i have super expensive fish. So after he starting beefing w/ everyone........back he went
I do have zebra morays in the tank now. a much better choice.

Cool

I have a niger trigger, a volitans lion, a tang, and a snowflake eel in my 90 gal now. Everyone gets along just fine. The trigger has his hole that he likes to hang out in. No problems with anyone fin nibbling. From what I have seen, the eel is the most territorial.
What people said about Lionfish is true. Once you decide to do lions, you plan everything else around them. We feed silversides, spiro. blocks, and some flake. The silversides are a little messy, so I keep up on cleaning the tank, filters, and water changes.
