At the Old LFS i worked for, we had a zebra eel and a porcupine puffer that I hand fed regularly.

Mine used to. The box fish I had used to as well. I hand feed my snowflake eel as it's the only good way to ensure he gets anything. He actually coils up in my hand before grabbing the food from me, then he shoots off into the LR.
My clown fish won't take it from me, he tries to knock it from my fingers by hitting me with the side of his body. |

My powder blue tang did (before his demise
). Now my foxface rabbit not only eats from my fingers, he rubs his body all around my hand every time I put it in the tank--near the feeding spot. He never flares, just sort of rubs like a cat.My sand sifter bullet goby also takes food from my fingers, but he's deffinately attacking. Mean little cuss, for a goby.

How do you guys "hand feed" your fish?
Do you just pinch some flake food and stick your hand in?? Did you have to train your fish to do this?? CaptK |

It took mine a bit of getting used to, but yeah, I just pinch and dip my hand in. With my eel, I usually feed him something like squid or shrimp that comes in a frozen cube. I thaw out one or two, squeeze them into a patty, tear them in half, and using my hand put it up to his face and he sucks it down.
Most fish will tend to forgo safety for food. ![]() |
