My maroon has her bare spot under a rock overhang, and gaurds it jealously. She's in the 40 gal caulerpa tank, so it doesn't matter.
But I have the hand's down FIRST PLACE WINNERS in the 100 gal FOWLR. These are 5 big 8"long convict blennies (engineer gobies)Pholidichthys leucataenia. They used to stay exclusively in the left 1/3 of the tank, so their digging wasn't a big deal. But now they've taken over the whole aquarium. Every three days, there is a completely different underground apartment system. They change the sand arrangement whether I mess with it or not. Thankfully, all the rocks are atop PVC pipe.
These guys are really cool fish, and I'm wildly attached to them, but I'd never consider one for a reef tank. Not only do they constantly dig, they deposit the sand all over the rocks. I need to blow it off with the turkey baster at least every other day.
