FOWLR Fish Questions
I know how much everyone like stocking questions, but please help me out
I'm putting together a 45G tank (I also have a 55 and 125 reef, and a 10G nano). The tank is 36" long x 12" deep x 24" tall. It is a Fish only with Live Rock tank. It has a 5" sandbed, with alot of rubble coral mixed on the top. The tank is viewable from both front and back, so I decided I wanted the rock in the middle of the tank. So I made 4 - 3/4" PVC piping going vertically up the tank attached to a base siliconed to the bottom of the tank. I then drilled holes in some LR and made the tank with the rock all climbing upwards almost to the top of the tank. It also has a few nice shelf pieces. Really intresting looking! Maybe you know what this type of tank is called? When I get pics I'll email you one. In short, their is alot of swimming room in the tank, a fish could keep going in circles around the rocks like a race car swirving threw cones! Anyways, back to the question. I am not using any skimmers or filters, just live rock, a DSB, and good water circulation. The tank is completely covered, so I don't have to worry about fish jumping out. This list isn't final, just looking for info so I can start crossing fish off the list. Will a Yellowheaded Jawfish and a Pistol Shrimp/Watchman Goby live in this tank peacefully together? There's no worry of the rock falling because it's all up off the sand bed a half inch or so. Should I get a pair of shrimp gobies, or just one? I believe Jawfishes shouldn't be kept together correct? I'm also curious to know if I could keep a longnose butterfly fish (juv), in this tank for a year or two? Or is it just too small? The only corals in this tank are xenia, polyops, and zooanthids. Would a sixline wrasse or a neon goby take a mate (friend) if I added one? I was thinking of trying to pair up the goby with a small friend. The 6line I have no clue about. Would I be able to keep a flame angel and a coral beauty angel together in this tank if added together as juv's? Do you think a small orchid dottyback or longnose hawkfish would chow down on my large cleaner shrimp? Would they pose a threat to a coral banded shrimp? Would the coral banded shrimp pose a problem with a jawfish or gobies? Any help, insight, opinions would be highly appreciated.

First you say the top will be covered. What is it being covered with? Since there is now protien skimmer or sump you will need to get some oxygen exchange in the tank and if it is pretty much sealed on top it could be a problem.
As for the fish. A long nose butterfly would be to big for that size tank. I have one in a 4 ft long tank and it is pushing it. A juvinal maybe for a year if lucky. A flame angle and a coral beauty could maybe work depend on the flame angle. Be sure to put them in at the same time and if anything would go in with them make sure the angles are last put in. I dont think you would have a problem with the jaw fish in goby together. The six line and the neon goby pretty much get along with everyone. I have both and they dont bother anyone. The neon is usally busy cleaning fish that will let him. A long nose hawk probably would be a problem with a cleaner but not positive and the orchid wouldnt be a problem. |

OK, I have done alittle research and found some answers. I still have some questions though. I've decided to upgrade the tank to a 65G, which is the same dimensions only 6" deeper.
I only plan to keep 1 flame angel now. No coral beauty. That's a definate. I'd also really like to keep a Longnose butterfly fish. I'd also really, really like to keep a picasso triggerfish. But, I'm not sure how the trigger would treat the butterfly, angel, etc... Will he chomp the jawfish? Or, will he constantly hide bc of fear? Will the trigger chomp on my cleaner shrimp (big guy)? What about the neon goby, orchid dotty, and sixline? I'm also guessing hermits are out of the question? See, my problem is I know nothing about triggers ![]() I've dropped the watchman/pistol (I'll keep em in my 125). I've also decided to keep only 1 jawfish. About the coral banded, Robert Fenner told me he'd be fine. Hopefully he's right Now, will the trigger eat him too? Will the coral banded eat the large cleaner?Depending on how full the tank is, I may get a kole tang, or yellow? I'm also planning on getting a skimmer, probaly the prism bc of it's small slim design. If needs be, I could always add a second. Love to see the moderators chime in here, as I know my reef tanks, but no nothing about FOWLR, and aggressive fish. Depending on the answers I get, I'll change the list as necessary. Thanks All!

So lets see you would like:
Flame angle Long Nose butterfly Picasso Trigger Orchid Dottyback Six line wrasse neon goby I have or have had all of these fish at one time. My current 50 FOWLR tank has a Longnose butterfly 4" Niger Trigger 3" almost Orchid Dottyback Midas Blennie Neon Goby 12 hermits I would go with the flame angle and either the long nose or the picasso plus the orchid and the neon and maybe the sixline if you dont get the longnose. The problem with picaso trigers is that they are always getting mouth fulls of sand and spitting it out all over the tank covering everything in sand thus is why I got rid of the one I had a while back. If you go with the long nose and would not get the six line since they both hunt the rocks a lot looking for copods and such for food thus compete for food. You should be ok with the long nose in a 65 as long as you get a smaller one. I have a niger trigger in my 50 with my longnose butterfly and they get along fine. My Niger is on about 3" max. The prizm skimmer is a bit small for a 65 but should work ok even though a remora would be a better skimmer for the load of fish you want to add. With a picaso trigger I dont believe that you have much luck keeping any shrimp alive since most eat shrimp in the wild and love krill and other fresh shrimp to eat. Hermits will not be a problem. I have 12 in my 50 but no snails because the long nose eat them all. Link to my 50 http://www.tendar.homestead.com/50gall.html I put my midas and orchid back in the tank a week ago and haent updated yet they where in the tank before. |
