True and False Percs
Curious as to whether anyone has ever had the two species pair up and spawn. I've heard that they will pair, but if they do spawn will they be a cross between the two species or have dominant traits. Any experience or speculation? Thanks.

According to Joyce Wilkerson, it is possible for A. percula and A. ocellaris to pair up and produce fertile offspring. The progeny would be a mixture of the parents, grandparents, etc. They would not all be identical to each other but would exhibit varying degrees of similarity to one or the other parent. She calls them Percularis Clowns. It should be possible to fix certain traits that you find desirable but I have no idea how many generations that would take.

Thank you, Ninong. I have a large ocellaris and a smaller true perc that are paired. I debated whether to separate them and find like-species mates but since they seem like a good match, I'm leaving them alone. Don't really care if they spawn, but was curious as to the outcome if they did. Just an off-handed question; Would there be a market for mixed species clowns or would most people want the "pure-breds?"

That's a controversial question on the boards. It has been asked in the past and the responses from most of the members who responded were that they didn't like the idea.
I believe C-Quest may have crossed these, or may it was ORA. Anyway, at least one of the commercial breeders has done it but I don't know if they are marketing the offspring or not. Even if it were possible to fix the 'better' traits of each into the cross, people may not like the idea. The better traits would be a cross that was less feisty than Percula and more tolerant of conspecifics in the same tank like Ocellaris, and possibly a better swimmer than Percula but with more intense coloration than Ocellaris, etc., etc. Ninong |

Thanks again. Very informative. I had posted the same question on RC and got no response. Kind of like being "shunned" for bringing up a taboo subject.
We'll see what happens.
