Cycling thoughts plz

Setting up a new 55 gal,my wife wants to try and breed fish(just because I make some extra money on fraging some corals in my reef). Have some lace rock in my reef getting seasoned now, will put that in to 1st cycle.Have some live rock to spare will save that for after cycle to help populate my sand bed.My question is if I place some of my new sand in a nylon bag in my reef tank ,how long would it take to get seeded with bacteria.Also anyone with a good website on clownfish breeding(percs or others).

Why not just take the sand out of the reef tank and put the new stuff in to replace it?

the_blue_tuna,thanx for the response. Im just looking for some bacteria right now.Would rather not take a chance of killing my little sand critters during cycle.Will put in some of my LR after cycle to populate the sand bed.

You could just cycle with some dead shrimp to start a bacteria colony . Keep your sand bag in your reef tank while the new tank is cycling . When its (the new tank) finished then throw the sand bag in. You could also do the same thing possibly a little more efficently , with some filter floss.

Thanx again. Had planned on the fishless cycling method. Will use nylon bag method to load my sand with bacteria. Are you talking just plain filter floss to be populated with bacteria, if so sounds quick and easy.

I don't think you would lose any of the critters in the sand during the cycle, I just cycled my 75 Gallon using ammonia chloride, I added way too much and my levels were beyond any of my test kits (well above 10ppm.) I had dumped in a bunch of sand from my existing tank, which has a bunch of worms, pods, etc, in it. All of them seemed to thrive during the cycle, I even had a hermit crab in there as kind of a "canary in the mineshaft" type of experiment, and it molted and got larger during the cycle.

If you are using the same kind of sand between tanks, I would just take a few hearty cup fulls and dump them into the new tank from the old. It may not cycle much faster though if your already planning to move seasoned live rock over however.
