question about current

How do you know when you have the right amount of current in your tank? I have a FOWLR 29gal. Water movement is produced by a a 170powerhead, venturi skimmer and hang on back filter for phosguard.

In my opinion, in a FO tank you basically should have surface agitation over atleast 1/2 of the surface of the tank. Enough to promote proper gas exchange. You should also have enough current so all of the water is moved in the tank. No dead spots. If you have rock work walls or anything, you want current channeled behind and around your rocks.

Feed frozen brine shrimp once in awhile, it will give you a good idea on how your current is working. They scatter everywhere and will basically show you the path your current takes.

It sounds like you have more than enough equipment on your tank producing current, I would just make sure it is all pointing in the right directions.

Hi Tee,
I also have a 29G, but I have corals also.
I use a MaxiJet 1200 powerhead and a backpack skimmer that provides some water movement.
I have the MJ aimed towards the surface of the water to agitate it.

although half surface agitation is good the whole surface may be better. its doesnt take much to flow across. just aim the ph up at an angle.;)
