When i came home from work this morning i found a brown algae could this be ( brown algea chrysophyta ) all over my ocean rock by the end of the day it was on the glass the tank has been running for 10 days with 3 damsels and a red leg hermit all are feeding ok .
I tested my water on the 26.02.02 Ammonia 0.25 mg/l Nitrite 3.0 mg/l Nitrate 50 mg/l ph 8.2 Temp 80 S.G 1.021 The nitrate was high so today 27.02.02 i did a 5 gal water change in the tank the water i have is nitrite and nitrate free the results after the water change was. Ammonia 0 mg/l Nitrite 2.0 mg/l Nitrate 25 mg/l ph 8.2 Temp 80 S.G 1.022 Tank is a juwel rio 240 for 240L tank i have 60 kg of ocean rock in it not living rock ,also 2 inch bed of coral sand on bottom of tank. The tank is set up with reverse osmosis water and kent sea salt to a SG of 1.024 Equipment 250 watt heater seaclon protein skimmer 100 gallen capacity pump driven venturi height 18" chamber 13 1\2 inch . Maxijet 250 powerhead Lights in tank are monn glow and a normal fluorescent Filters we have two one for biological and one for mechanical filtering External is a eheim professionel filled with algarde biohome media. The other filter comes with the tank and is driven with a power head 300l i think in this i have a white pre filter and then a black carbon sponge and under that i have two coarse sponges. I went and got a phosphate test kit and both new and tank water came back at 0 ppm ![]()

Hi andrew brearley,
It sounds, and looks, to me like your tank is in the cycling process. You might go through an algae bloom, or two, during this process. Which it sounds like you are going through right now. I am not sure what others might say about this, but when I cycled my tank I did very little in the way of water changes. How much are you changing? CaptK PS = Welcome to Reefland |

this is actually not a problem. its part of the cycling like cap explained.
you should check the salt book you read through before the set up. it should be near the beginning. ![]() |
