current in a FOWLR
I have a hob filter with no floss and a venturi skimmer on my 29gal FOWLR is this enough water circulation and current? I have a extra powerhead if I need it. The tank has 2 small ocellaris.
thanks |

As a general starting point , you can figure 10 X tank volume for a flow rate . This applies more to reefs and is JUST A RULE OF THUMB . Using that rule you would want to move about 290 gallons an hour for your 29 . Whats more important though in my opinion , is rather than amount of water you are moving , is do you have any dead spots . I would add another powerhead to eliminate a dead spot , regardless of how much water I was moving. Another thing to remember is that our fish come from an environment where tons of water move over them constantly . When we put them in our little aquariums , they tend to not get as much exercise as they would in thier native habitat. Thats why our fish have those little beer bellies

When you say dead spots, do you mean anywhere in the tank or just on the surface? Thanks

ANy where in the tank that has dead spot tend to build up detris and cause algea problems. There should be good water surface agitation also but not the shole surface has to be agitated. It is more in the tank it self that needs water flow. Usally one or 2 power heads ppointed towards the surface creats a good agitation and if they are pointed towards each other they hit in the middle and creat a down ward flow of water into the tank spreading out ward.
