as far as tangs are if you add one you want somthing of a different body type. anything that looks the same usually will fight.

well as fishrule informed us he has 5 yellows in his 200. his tank is a good size for this and they will bicker but as he mentioned its only occasionaly and that will happen. anything smaller than that as naser said different body types will reduce the aggression.
i tried two yellows in a 125 and it failed. had to bring one back. i have read that its possible to keep more than one hippo tang together, but that's another fish that grows large and becomes more active as it grows. the young ones will hide alot. but these may be your best bet. i may try it with them small and later upgrade my tank when i move it to my theater room after its built. would like to put a 10- 12' 300-500 gallon or so eventually. ![]() |

You said 300- 500 gallon tank. Be sure you get the 500 gallon. Ever since I purchased my 200, I always wanted a bigger tank 300-400. The main problem is I made it a room divider between 2 walls. But the walls are 8 feet apart, I should of gotten 300 gallon 8 feet tank, but tried to save some money. Bigger is always better and you can never regret.

Only if you add them all at once... Yellows seem to do best when say 3 are added all at once. But if you have 1 and try to add a second the first will pester and chase and harrass the second until it dies. Seems to me regal tangs are the same way. Never had a P-tang, only rich people have those... LOL!
I tend to take a slightly different approach to deciding what fish to add and I somewhat agree with Naser on this issue... In a perfect world we would all have 600 gallon tanks to enjoy our tangs in. But I have to believe that a fish that was caught from the OCEAN read HUGE WATER has a much better chance of survival in my 55 or Matts 130 then it has in that 8X8X8 cube the LFS is keeping it in. At least once it's "home" it will recieve genuine care and even if the tank isn't huge it'll get a proper diet and not be harassed by larger fish or become a food source itself. How can we be ABSOLUTELY sure of any of our theorys on tank size regarding Tangs? I think genuine care and excellent water quality can outweigh the dimensions of our glass cubes. Mike ![]() |

pose ,your missing the point. it wasnt to try and 'rescue' all the tangs being kept at the LFS's around the world and putting them in any size tank you have at your house just so they can get genuine care.
what do you think would happen if they sat at the LFS? no one bought them , do you think they would continue to stock these fish? i dont. "once it's home" 'home' where, your 55? it was already taken from its home remember? if you notice a fish being harrassed and its a fish that you truly cannot accomodate then all we can do is bring it to the attention of the store owner or manager, i do this on occasion when i see things (i.e recently at petco had damsels in with a couple of triggers) there is a beautiful 6" blue ringed angel that has been sitting in a 20 gal for the past month at petco. price 92.99. should i rescue this fish at that price and stick it in my 125? no way. if no one impulsively buys it and it perishes, guess what.. chances are that you will not see one back there any time soon. yes the fish will probably be better off in my tank than where it is now....for awhile anyway. Poseidon writes: "I think genuine care and excellent water quality can outweigh the dimensions of our glass cubes." one should not be compared with the other, i.e small tank excellent water vs large tank poor water. which is better, IMO neither. minimum proper sized tank with best water quality that your experience will allow. |

it has nothing to do with tangs per se, but fish in general. hence my references to damsels and angels as well.
but whatever...........points expressed, done here. |
