Unhappy Cleaner Shrimp black patches

Found some small black patches on the body of one of my cleaner shrimp. It has been there for around 2 weeks. It is eating alright though little shy...

Just worrying if there is any disease with it!!!

BTW, anyone knows how to distinguish male/female for cleaner shrimps? I think I've got two female as they are laying eggs all the times.....

Thanks in advance..

Thumbs up

How long have you had the shrimp? Have they molted yet since you've had them? I'm not 100% sure, but I think black spots develop on all cleaner shrimp a week or so before they molt. Once the shrimp has molted, the new exoskeleton will not have black spots until a week or so before it's next molting. This is what I have observed with my cleaner shrimp.

I had a cleaner that developed some black spots in my nano tank. I read somewhere that it was a type of fungus caused by poor water quality but I'm not sure.

Regarding the sex of your cleaners, it depends on where they are in their molt cycle. Cleaner shrimp will lay eggs as a female and store them under their tail. After eggs are fertilized, they will release fry into water column and then molt. The once female cleaner will emerge from the molt as a male. After they molt again, they are female and lay eggs, etc, etc.

A pair of cleaner can release fry (food for corals and fish) every two weeks if well fed. One will be the female and the other a male. Then they switch.

hope that helps, oz

My experience has been the same as Tervill's. I'd notice black spots on the exoskeleton prior to molting. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.
