New blue spot jawfish
Well got my new Blue spot Jawfish last night.
He is in his new 40 gall pentgon tank and has made one heck of a storm cloud in the water moving all the sand around last night and this morning. I have not even seen him in there yet. The water is starting to clear up some and might be visible by tommorow. If he is I will get some pics post them. He is the only one in the tank for now. Once settled in about a month I will be adding a carpenters wrasse and possible a royal gramma or a forktail fang blenny. |

COOL!!!!!
DO post pics as soon as he shows himself. I have a pair of pearly jaws in my 55 -- they are a RIOT and always good entertainment. A Carpenter's wrasse is likely my next fish, too. You will really enjoy the jawfish. He'll have that 40 totally excavated in no time. They're quite the engineers! Rebecca |

Pls be sure you have a tight top with no holes because they will find them to carpet surf. I had one and he escaped thru a 1/2 inch gap between the HOB skimmer and the rim of the tank. Hope you enjoy him just beware.

I have the top cover with egg crate and the lights are sitting on top of the eggcrate.
The cloud has settled down some but he is still busy building his house. I have put in 3 handfulls of rubble for him and he keeps using it up. I tryed to get a pic today but he wasnt going for it. It wouldnt have been very good anyway since it is still some what cloudy. Hopfully I will get a decent this weekend. He is doing good though and eating and seems pretty happy. I have decided to skip on the wrasse since I think the tank may be a little small for one that swims that much so I am thinking I will put in a pair of bangi cardnials and maybe a fire fish. Will see. |

A little closer with out flash.
The only problems so far is feeding him. He wont eat anything unless it comes with in about 2" of his holes so add 10 hermits for clean up foods and willbe getting a couple of brittle stars wed along with a royal gramma and hopfully the gramma will entice him to come out a little for food. |

Tendar,
He's totally COOL! They are pretty shy though, as a species, from what I've seen of mine and from what I have read. I "target feed" mine with a turkey baster -- they won't venture too far from their burrows, even for food. This guy may venture out more as he settles in, but quite possibly not. They aren't aggressive feeders at all -- mine are in w a long nosed hawk and they won't compete for food. They are also picky about their diet Mine won't eat Formula I for example. They LOVE krill, bloodworms, live black worms, squid, clams. Find the food your guy likes, and he'll eat like a champ, as long as you squirt it close to his "hole" ![]() |

He doesn't seen to like krill for some reason. The store owner got in 2 and his eats krill but just blows it away. It does it brine shrimp and PE Mysis shrimp though. It is venturing around the tank more each day but still doesnt go all over the tank after food though.

just a thought.........aren't brittle stars natural predators of Jawfish (be it blue spot or pearly)? You might want to look into it a bit before the purchase of brittle stars. Great scavengers, but I'm reasonably sure the blue spot wasn't cheap - and you might want to protect it!
just my $0.02 karin ![]() p.s. that's a beautiful fish!

The brittle star is brown kind they good I had one for 2 years and never a problem.
Its the green brittle stars that are preditors. I also added a Royal gramma last wed and they get along fine they ignore each other which is cool and nice to have a little movement in the tank. Also add 10 hermits to clean up all the uneaten food since the blue spot does eat but is still a little finicky. Last edited by tendar; 01-21-2003 at 05:18 PM. |

Thanks for the info - I knew I remembered seeing it somewhere about the brittle stars!
Keep us posted on the blue jaw - I'd love to know how he does over time.
