what temp is good for my tank?

i have a 55 gallon reef with clowns and tangs and such. my question iswhat is a good temp for the water? i have a heater but havnt used it. is 78-79-80 good as long as it doesnt fluctuate with the lights on? i am getting a fan to try and dissipate the heat from the lamps as well. thanks and please help.

This is a topic of heated debate. No pun intended.

I would venture to say that a general average is in the 79 to 80 range.

I am currently running mine in the 81 to 82 area. I am using VHO lighting and my house is air conditioned so I don't contend with any overheating problems.

79-82 is perfect. I keep mine at 79-80 and I run MH on it. Seems to be healthy.

I try to keep my tanks some where between 78-80 with only a .5 degree flucuation.
