My water appears to be slighty cloudy, is this normal? My tank has been up for @3-4 Weeks and is a 46 Gal with 50 Lbs of live rock, 40 lbs of live sand, and an AMiracle PL1000 Wet/Dry filter and skimmer. I have 2 Blue Damsels in the tank and are doing just fine. My PH is 8.4, Amonia is 0, Nitrate and Nitrites are 0, Salinity is 1.021 and temp is 77 deg.
Thanks Tom ![]() Last edited by TomSeaman; 10-27-2003 at 07:06 PM. |

Hi Tom!
The cloudiness could be from a number of things but the first thing to look at would be if the sand was recently stirred up a little. Mine used to cloud up a bit on occasion when it was first set up as well. You might want to try and run a little carbin in your sump as well to help polish the water. Secondly, if your tank is 3 weeks old, it would be really amazing if there were no detectable ammonia, nitrites or nitrates which are almost always detectable. Can I ask what kind of test kits you are using? Did you use fully cured live rock when you set up the tank? Regards, Scott Z. |

Tom,
Considering that your tank is now 16 days old I would think that the water should be clear. However, I am surprised that you are getting zero readings on nitrite and nitrate. Even if your live rock was fully cured, I would expect that you should be getting some sort of reading on a tank set up on Oct. 11th. What brand of test kits are you using? ![]()

I agree usually a new tank goes through a period where the water gets cloudy and then clears on its own. When I was younger a LFS owner called it a Nitrite Cloud and sure enough when the nitrites went down the cloudiness went away. He recommended an AIR pump and LOTS AND LOTS of bubbles. Yikes that sounds scary today doesn't it??? I would double check the test results and I bet something shows up.
Maybe Ninong can put a little science to either prove or disprove this theory on a "nitrite cloud" But it sounded reasonable to a 16yr old (me) at the time!!! Mike |

The test kit I'm using is the Red Sea Master Marine Kit, I just checked my water again and the readings were as follows:
Nitrates-0 Nitrites-0 Amonia-.25 ppm Ph-8.4 Salinity-1.021 Any other recomendations for clearing up the water? I also added a bag of marine carbon. Thanks Tom |

Being the tank is so NEW I'd say leave it be it'll clear up on its own...
