Skimmer under 200$

I was recommended by people here to get the AquaC Remora Pro Skimmer. 200-220 + shipping and handling is a bit much cash for me. Is there any non-hang on tank skimmers that would be as effective and cheaper?

I am probably going to get an 80 gallon tank, they got them at pet-smart for $180 all-glass, unless I can save up another 100$ for a 120, but I don’t think I can. I am going to use a Emperor 400 filter also. This is going to be a fish only tank.

Any comments on the Red-Sea Berlin Systems?

The usual response to your kind of question is to buy the best skimmer you can afford. And although that advice is correct we all can only afford so much, some more and some a little less.
To answer your question the Red Sea Berlin is not really in the same league as an Aqua C or an Euro-Reef but for a 80gal. tank that is lightly stocked it will do an acceptable job. The Emp.400 will work for a while but when you can I'd build yourself a sump. It can be done for not alot of money. You should also invest in a couple powerheads like the Maxi-Jet 1200 for water movement.

The Remora is expensive and even worse...LOUD!
Check out the sump-base skimmers from CPR. I have one of the SR2s on one of my tanks and it works like a charm. Quiet, effecient and has yet to need any type of maintainence outside of normal cleaning of filter meadia and collection cup emptying.
It should work great for your tank.

If you have a pet supermarket in your area check it out. I just bought a perfecto 120g for $199 there. Then I would go to wally world and get two or three of their 125gph power heads which abou $20 each. Then I would go to the Dr Foster web site and get the larger 400 skilter power filter. These filter incorporate a small skimer in the filtering process. Many people do not like them because the venturi mechanism is noisy. However, I have one and if you disable the venturi mechanism, and insert a lime wood air diffuror it quits right down and works pretty good. What I like about the skilter is the huge filter box. What I do is take some of the clear mesh plastic bags that grapes come in. Rinse them out and fill the with plastic straws that have been cut about a half an inch long. Works as good as bio-balls and a fraction of the cost. I would also strongly recommend that you build askimmer asap to suplement what I have already suggested.
Good luck
