does a mag 5 need to be in water or can you use it inline i dont want to burn it up i cant find my paperwork i want to use it for flow so i can take the powerheads out of my 30 gallon tank

They can be used either way, however they are not recommended for external use. It is my belief though that the mags up to mag5 are more suitable for external plumbing than the higher rated mags. Many people have used them externally just be careful tightening your fittings to the mag as the housing is made of cheap plastic and can break/crack very easily...you may even want to take off the housing from the pump and install the fittings then install the housing back onto the pump. HTH
