Remora pump suggestions ?

Hi all,

I have an AquaC Remora HOB coming this week and am looking for suggestions for a pump to drive it. What do the experts suggest?

Thanks,
Bill

Get a MaxiJet 1200. They rock. THey are small and push a ton of water.

Thanks! I just bought 2 of them (ebay)and should be here next week. I thought I'd use one for the Remora and one for flow around the tank. I also have a Powersweep 228 coming as well. Any opinions on those? I thought it might help move the live stuff around from my live rock(yet to be purchased) onto the base rock I just got last nite. (hirocks.com)

Getting ready to start up this 75gal tank after 15 yrs away from the hobby, I feel almost like I'm 10 yrs. old again in late December, waiting for Christmas to come!!

Oh, one other question....is an RO/DI system imperitive? I know lots of folks are using them for their top-off water, but what about the initial fill up ?

Thanks again to everyone on this board for all the help!

Bill

Bill,

The Powersweep was a good concept but is a poor product. They push very, very little water around and once calcaraceous algae starts developing in your tank, the power head will stop sweeping without frequent cleanings.

As for the RO/DI, it is strongly recommended. At the least, you will want to get a Tap Water Purifier to help remove any impurities that are in your tap water. Doing so now will save you pain in the future.

I couldn't afford an RO filter, so I bought a product that Aquarium Pharmacuticals makes called a Tap Water Filter. I says it is a deionizer, but i guess it just filters out any impurities. the filters contain carbon and a some sort of resin, the only bad side is you can only get a few uses out of it before you need to replace the filter cartridge. I think they sell them for about 50$, but the replacement filters are around 20$. It works for what I have, and I found an incredible difference in brown algae growth using it a few times, cut it back incredibly.

Yeah that is the product I was talking about. It is helpful (is a DI unit) however can get expensive as you mentioned. You can get a good 4 stage RO/DI unit for about $200 shipped and the RO portion will extend the life of the DI stage dramtically.

IMO I bought 2 powersweeps & got the 3rd free and wish I would have paid the extra money (at the time) and got the maxi-jets.
