Closed Loop System
Hi everybody,
I'm busy planning my new reef tank and will be adding a closed loop system to the tank. I have seen many reefers just drill holes in their tanks for bulkheads for their CL's. My question now is what do reefers put over the holes to prevent livestock (fish, mobile inverts etc) from being sucked into the loop? Would it be possible to have the CL drain in an overflow? Just breifly my tank (intended SPS) will be in the 70-90 gallon range although here in South Africa we use the metric system so, I'm guessing. It should hold roughly 250 odd litres excluding the sump. I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks.

I'm sure it would be fine to get the water from the overflow, however the point of a CLosed loop is to ADD circulation. If you are taking it form the overflow it just decreases what will able to come from the return pump in the sump. Less water in = less water out.
Here is a "bulkhead Screen" that you can use to help keep the Fishies out... Here |

Thanks Poseidon,
I appreciate your advise. My closed loop intake will not be in the overflow. Thanks again.

Does anyone have a pic of a closed loop system? Can I do this without drilling the tank?

Apparently you can set-up a closed loop without drilling your tank. Search reefland, I'm sure you'll find something. Anybody else??
