filtration in 9 gal sphere glass tank

Hi All,

I bought a 16 inch diameter glass sphere with a 6 inch top which I am converting into a mini saltwater tank. I calculated that the sphere will hold about 8-9 gallons. Mostly, I intend to have a couple of small hardy fish (damsels, clowns or firefish-not sure yet), and a few cleaner shrimp.

My problem is filtration. I have been able to easily stick a small pump near the top of the tank. I figure I can wrap some floss around the opening to serve as mechanical filtration. However, I don't think this will be enough.

I really want to have a protein skimmer, but can't figure out how to connect one, given the top opening is small and round. Anyone have any ideas on how to fit a skimmer, or otherwise implement an alternate method of filtration?

TIA!

Sphere tanks are GREAT to look at, almost Impossible to keep. They don't have nearly enough surface area, and as you are finding out hard to filter. I would keep that one fresh water, and stick an UG filter in there, with an air pump to help keep oxygenation up.

I would probably run a protein skimmer in the dead center middle, from bottom to top, and cover the skimmer with either live rock, or custom made fake rock.

something like this:
