CPR skimmer ?

i just got a used CPR skimmer for 30 bucks. its pretty messy inside, so i'm gonna clean it out tomorrow. it came with a rio pump, but i wanted to put a maxijet in there. the one thing i noticed is that there is a some sort of rubber gasket that was loose around the collection cup, and i dont really know where it goes. it is too big to fit around the scum cup, and thats the only place i could think it would go since the cup fits loose in the housing. i've heard people post things like "raise the scum cup" in the cpr's to get better foam, but mine doesnt fit snug in there. i just got it about an hour ago, so i'm gonna scope it out some. look for another gasket for the cup.

i just bought a maxi-jet1200, but i think i need to get a venturi valve for the intake, similar to what my seaclone does. the air gets pulled into the impellar with the help of this little valve that doesnt come with just the powerhead. so i think i gotta go to marineland.com to see if i can get one, or if any one knows of a easier way. or if i should just use the venturi air on the return part of the pump. the skimmer is looking a little better, i might set it up tonight or let it soak overnight.

got some bad news, well, not too bad. i was putting all the PVC pipes back on after cleaning it, and when i was attaching the intake tube, i guess i over tightened it and it broke at the threads. i just sent an e-mail CPR to see if i can get a new intake tube, and i ordered that venturi valve kit. BTW, thanks poseidon.

I ordered the new intake tube from Amekaaquatics.com. so its not bad news anymore, just a set back, but i'll be able to get it more clean. also i need to wait for that venturi valve. I think i'm gonna get another Bak-Pak from my boss at work, he just took down his 40gal. reef. he was talking to me the other day, and was wondering if i'd want some of his extras. i might buy a MH fixture and ballast off him for 50 bucks, he's got 2, but if i plan on doing a reef later, i think its gonna be a 29gal. so i'll just get one. the reef is in years to come, but i'm probly gonna buy the fixture and ballast just so i have it. also gonna be buying a hang on refugium in the more near future, taking the place of the penguin 330. my tank is starting to grow corraline algae, i can see little bud looking things on different places on the LR. thanks for that site again Poseidon, hooked me up nice with that venturi valve. cool.

No Prob Leddy, I do a LOT of my shopping there. Jeremy and Cory are SUPER COOL. I bought a Kent Nautilis skimmer there, and it developed a small leak below the output bulkhead. I called them and they shipped me a NEW SKIMMER and included a call tag to send the old one back with. the whole deal only took like 3 days to get the new one, and they didn't make me buy the replacement and then credit me when the old one came back, they just shipped the replacement no questions asked!!! I don't think you can get better customer service then that. They made a LIFETIME customer outta me!!!

excellent, they seem like a nice place. I might have to order that refugium from them.

Bubble Remover?

It came with a bubble remover, i guess, the part usually goes where the bio-bale goes in the housing, sort of a zig zag hunk of acrylic. the return doesnt have the siphon tube because of this, so my question is to any one who might use this contraption, does it work, or should I just get a return siphon? I guess I'll just rock it for now, and if I get some steady pay, get one and experiment. But if anyone knows somebody somewhere at sometime that has used it or uses it, say maybe in comparrison to a SeaClone, which i know people hate, how is it? as you can see i'm pumped for this new project, anxious for these parts to get here.!!! cool

nevermind, i was just looking at the ones with the siphon tubes, and they have an extra chamber in the housing, 3 total. the bak-pak2R. so the bubble remover is a go, and the bio-bale isn't all that nesessary.

anyone know of putting a heater in the skimmer? Just an idea that came up, seems possible, but dont know for sure yet. Hide the heater inside the housing where the return is, less equipment showing in the tank. I have no clue if this a good idea, or a disaster waiting to happen. the only thing i'd be concerned about is the ammount of water from the return, wether it would heat the tank evenly, or damage the acrylic or something. I dont know, just a thought. comments wanted. i found a thread commenting on the same subject, seems like there is a risk of melting the housing, but some people use it that way without problems.

IMO injecting the cooler room air into the protien skimmer might give the heater a "false" temp reading causing it to stay on longer than it should, raising the overall tank temp. Some of the heaters come with a rubber protector on the end and the suction cup bracket that should keep it from melting the plastic, and with good water flow around the heater it shouldn't have a problem.?. Also, Amekaaquatics.com has that O-ring for the CPR skimmer you might be needing???

that heater thing is a plan, but not right now. I gotta wait for the intake and venturi valve to get here. as for the O ring, i got one at home depot for like 50 cents. it fits snug around the cup, allows me to raise and lower it. thats solved, now the heater thing i'm gonna wait on for the moment. thanks.

i'm picking up another bak-pak from my boss tomorrow for 10 bucks! He said he'll bring in a MH fixture w/ballast for me to check out aswell. I think I'm gonna run the two bak-paks and save the seaclone for a smaller tank in the future. I walked into a pot of gold fellas, what can I say. 2 bak-paks outta be better than 1 seaclone on an 80 ay? cant wait to hook em up. my tank will be happy.

should i just set up the bak-pak and ditch the seaclone, or should i set the bak-pak up with the seaclone still running, just to break it in? i'm anxious to get it up and see how it runs, but i plan on using the maxijet from the seaclone for one of the 2 bak-paks. i'm still waiting for the venturi valve for my new maxijet, but i just got the inlet for the bak-pak today. i should be picking up that other bak-pak from my boss tomorrow, and i have the day off so its tank maintenance day.
