return pump advice
Ok, I currently have a GenX MAK4 return pump on my 90gal tank.Let me tell you, it works like a champ but it is the loudest pump that I have ever heard. My wife and I cannot stand it anymore and it needs to go as soon as possible.
My question is that I have narrowed my choices down to these 2: Little Giant 4MDQSC CSL Velocity T3 My plumbing has about 14' of head (alot of 90 degree els) and the overflow does 400 gph. So I need a pump that can pump out about 450 gph at 14' head that is super quiet, reliable and doesn't put alot of heat into the water. If anyone can offer up which one would be the best choice following this criteria, that would be great! John |

The T3 would be the best bet if you want it quiet but they do add a few degrees. However, the T3s are made by CSL and they are out of business. The only place that will give you a nice warranty would be www.championlighting.com The little giants are decent pumps too but they do become noisy also. |

I too have heard that they add heat to the water, does anyone know approimately how much heat they can possibly add? I am running at about 78 degrees (residual heat from the pump, UV sterilizer, PH's, lights etc.) and I don't want to have to add a chiller if the t3 will add too much heat. I also heard that they don't always start back up in the event of a power failure, can anyone substaniate that? I would hate to replace the MAK 4 with a piece of junk for the sake of quietness. Does anyone know of a quiet pump that will pump over 400 gph with 14' head?

I have two Little Giants, a 4MDQX-SC as my system return pump and a 3MDQX-SC as my skimmer pump. Both pumps are too noisy for me and both pumps put out too much heat for me. I will replace them with something else when the time comes.
I have no suggestions for you right now as some of the quietest pumps have other issues.

I guess that I will have to put up with the MAK 4 until something better comes out. The problem, in my opinion, is that if it is air cooled, then it is loud. If it is water cooled then it heats the water too much, a real catch 22. If anyone has a pump that they recommend and why, I would appreciate it!

Check out the new Valuflo Sequence pump. They have one for only $139. I have several of the Sequence 1000 model pumps and they are totaly silent. They also have very low power consumption.

Kevin, I called about that Sequence Aspen pump and it would have fit the bill 1000 GPH at 14' (I could have backed the valve to 50%) but the big problem is that it needs 1 1/2" pipe running on the outlet for at least a 4' run to get enough pressure to go through a manifold to run the rest of my equipment that is set up for 3/4" sch 40 pipe (this is per the guy at the dealer) There is no way I could do this- there simply isn't enough room in my cabinet with my huge sump and all of the other equipment. I am truly bummed, I thought that we finally had a solution- apparently those pumps are virtually silent.

Noise is one reason that I have built an equipment room in my garage for the pumps, chiller, and sump. The noise from the pumps and fans on my old 70 gallon tank was a source of complaints from my wife. I had a Little Giant pump, which was pretty noisy. My new 210 will have 2 Mak4 pumps. I have heard them and they are pretty noisy.
