um... alright, i thought you said it was on ebay? anyways... about my other questions, would i be able to hook up a powerhead to the return pipe to return the water from the sump back to the 30gal? of course the powerhead would have to be the same GPH as the overflow.

Drill a 1/8" hole in the return line at the main tanks water surface to allow the syphon to be broken if the power should fail..
-what does that mean?

By introducing air into the return line sooner, it will break siphon earlier... Have you ever actually siphoned water out of you tank? If so, then you know when air gets into the hose it can cause the water to stop flowing... Maybe you should wait on the sump til you get a little more experience under your belt. At least get the basics down, because when you put the sump in, you will need at least BASIC plumbing skills....

and that it exactly what i am trying to get here...
-just one more question to be sure, on the left side of my drawing(the side where water is drained from the 30gal) i should have an overflow, and on the return side(right side of drawing) where water is pushed back to the tank, i would need a power head at the end of the pipe thats in the sump to push the water back up to the tank, right? okay i got that far, but what about drilling that 1/8" hole in the return line at the main tanks water surface? could you explain to me a little better how to do that?

Nothing else to explain, grab a drill and make a hole... Just above the waters surface. If power does fail, that hole will suck in air and prevent the water from going backwards down the return line... It is really THAT simple! Are there any GOOD LFS in your area that have a Reef setup? Because if you are able to actually SEE a sump setup it will all "click" and make sense. It is really very basic.
That Mag 5 that was mentioned earlier would be a good coice on a return pump too... Last edited by Poseidon; 03-15-2004 at 08:17 AM. |

No... Because when you pump water AGAINST gravity it will lose some of its pressure. So to move 300GPH UP HILL you need a pump that pushes MORE then 300GPH!!!! You will probably use a ball valve on the return line anyway, so you can adjust the flow to match your overflow box!!!

alright lets see, that 60$ for an overflow, another 50$ for a pump, and all the $$ for the plexiglas, PVC piping, filtermedia, foam block, underwater glue, and eggcrate for the cover, WOW, didnt really think a sump would cost so much.
alright just one more thing about that 1/8" hole, because i dont want to drill it wrong... when you say drill a hole at the water surface in the return pipe, do you mean drill a hole so its in the water, or so its partially sticking out, so it spills back into the tank when that water passes the hole?

My GO$ MAN!!!! this is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!!! I would put it as high up as I could, so that when the power fails it can break the siphon right away. That is the point!! |

Plexiglass is pretty darn cheap, but you might be able to get scrap glass cheaper. Check out your local glass shop. |

for the return pump, would a rio 2100, or a 1700 be sufficient? because i dunno if theres a big difference between the rio and the mag, but if there is then id rather spend the 20$ extra. but on the website where i got the sump drawing from they use a rio2100 for the return pump.

Yup there is a HUGE difference. Do a search on Rio on this board. I'm sure you will see. Has anyone ever showed you the "search" option up at the top? It is right next to the "New Posts" link. ANytime you have a simple question or need an answer right away, a lot of time it has already been asked in one form or another. Just click search, then enter text and hit GO, it will give you a list of all the previous threads containing that text. For example, if you enter "Mythrax Crab" or Emerald Crab, you will get this and other links
Check it out, I'll bet you will find tons of cool info!!! |

I don't use ANY foam in my sump at all. I just use it on occasion to "polish" the water. Maybe after I move rocks around or if I have really stirred things up trying to get a fish out of the tank.

You don't need to use ANY filter media. Just grow some Macro algae down there. You CAN use your standard light for that!! Grow some grape calurpa down there and it will keep the algae from growing in your main tank!!!

um.. what? lol, how do you do that?.
i think it would be better if i had the filter media and the foam block, it would keep the water a LOT cleaner.
