i think it would be better if i had the filter media and the foam block, it would keep the water a LOT cleaner.
I may be out of place here, but please tell me you are joking and you do know what he is talking about. You can’t possibly be designing something with out knowing why you are doing it.

hey thanks for that link in the PM you sent!

im deciding on which design i should go with now... i like the design of the first one i had, but the second one looks easier... i dunno i need some advice..., would the design you gave me be okay with a hang on skimmer also? becuase it is pictured with an IN sump skimmer. and about that sand, i would have to keep it lit, and with out the sand i woudnt need a light over the sump.

do you ever think about just making a simple tank without a slump? you can create a refuge out of a hang on back filter like a Aqua Clear 500 those are huge HOB filter. it hold about 1 gal of water and can mod it so you can put lots of algea in it. i'm doin this for my 20 gallon. i would put two of it put it too huge so i can only put one.

what are you goin to use for the sump? i would recommand just a plastic contianer for the sump because it will be much cheaper than a glass tank.

i already have a 10gal glass tank, becuase i had a 10gal running for a while until i upgraded to a 30gal, and i emptied out the 10, so thats one of the reasons why i wanted to build a sump, so i could just put the 10gal to use.

Buy a handful of different Macro Algaes from the LFS. The main purpose of a sump is 2 fold:

1) More water volume, and a place to hide heaters, and Skimmers.

2) A place to grow Macro Algae and other "critters" like Amphipods, that eventually get sucked into the return pump and become food!

Sorry, I was being rude. I was amazed at the questions you were asking. That stuff just seems like the aquarium fundamentals to me. I guess the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask.Sorry once again. Now I would like to give you a little advise from my past mistakes. I've learned that it's best to take your time, save your money up, and just buy good equipment. More often than not these DIY projects end up costing just as much, if not more, than it would have to just buy the piece of equipment to start with. I dont know about you, but I dont have a garage full of the proper tools, glues, space,or the TIME..
Ebay or the classified section of your local paper is a great place to find excellent used equipment for cheap.
