live rock online

How cured is LR when ordered online? A lot of time they say fully cured but is it still cured after you receive shipment or does it have to re-cured?

I bought some LR here......www.palmettoreefs.com

It was fully cured & tank ready. They will hand pick if asked. I was extremely pleased with the rock and their prices.

Some is some is not. There is no set answer. It depends how long it is out of water from the time they remove it from their tanks till it gets into your tank and how cured it really was to start. I've seen rock that was recieved and I'd say cured and I've seen some that was no more than uncured base rock.

"Fully cured" live rock is live rock that has been cured for at least three weeks in curing vats at the vendor's U.S. facility AFTER it is received from the Indo-Pacific. "Pre-cured" live rock is NOT fully cured. When live rock is collected, it is cleaned and then placed on racks in the open air where it is periodically sprayed with seawater for a period of time (days/weeks) in a process that results in what they call "pre-cured live rock." When this stuff arrives in Los Angeles it is often "transshipped" directly to your house by an online vendor. This is the cheapest way to go. What you receive is "pre-cured" live rock that now requires an additional three to five weeks of curing before it is "fully-cured" live rock.

Some online vendors take this pre-cured live rock and place it in large curing vats with heavy skimming, good water circulation and good lighting and cure it on their premises for a minimum of three weeks before selling it as fully-cured live rock. None of the live rock from the Indo-Pacific is fully cured, it is either pre-cured or raw. Raw live rock means they didn't do anything at all to it. They boxed it up as quickly as possible and shipped it to L.A. It will have loads of stuff, both good and bad, both dead and alive. Raw live rock is sometimes called "plant rock" because it usually has a lot of macroalgae. Some people like this stuff. It is not often available.

I purchased fully-cured live rock from Palmetto Reefs, too, and was extremely satisfied. If you're in the Bay Area you might want to consider a West Coast vendor. Unfortunately all of the live rock from the Indo-Pacific comes through LAX, none through SFO. Hobbyists in the L.A. area get the best deals.

I forgot to answer one of your questions. Live rock that is fully cured does not have to be re-cured as long as it is shipped properly or picked up in person. There will be only minimal dieoff in transit if properly handled.

In case you would like my 2-cents

I just bought 40lbs of Keilini Tonga LR fully cured from PremiumAquatics
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merch..._Code=Liverock

I had it shipped 2day air and had it held at the UPS office for pickup..
The rock was individually packed in water soaked paper, and looked great...
I put it directly in my tank and have not seen any die off yet....

Good Luck
Nick
