I was thinking of adding either a Canister Filter or a Hang On Filter to my Reef for Carbon and water polishing. Would this be a good Idea?? I currently put a bag of Carbon in my sump for about a week once a month. I was thinking I could get a HOT Magnum or a Fluval Canister plumbed into the sump and use it a week at a time for carbon and water polishing at the same time. After the week I would clean the filter Media in a mild bleach solution and discard the carbon. I have a CPR Aquafuge so I am not worried about killing off all of my pods. I just want to clean the water a little.

If you are dilligent in keeping it clean then I think it is a great idea. I think most of us use a canister/hang on or quick filter of some kind from time to time to polish our water. I personally feel that running one pretty much full time is a good thing. If and only if you maintain it properly

It will be maintained properly without a doubt. I have too much invested in this tank to let a filter kill or injure it!!

I also believe it running carbon 24 x 7. The above cannister filterss are a good choice .You should remove all foam blocks and other filter media packaged with the cannister filter.It is a good practice to clean out the carbon once a month.You can also throw half of the carbon away and rinse the other half and return it to the filter.You can add new carbon to this for a 1/2 new and 1/2 old mix.

If you decide to buy a canister filter stay away from the Fluval 304.
I had one for about two months and the rubber seal failed and drained about 5 gal. of water onto my floor
magnums are nice, but keep in mind, cleaning a canister filter once a week will get old fast.

You could not give me a Fuval because of that problem. I use Marineland Emperor 400 HOB filters. Cheaper and effecient.
