The best units are made by Aqua-Ultraviolet. When properly sized, they will keep your outdoor pond's water clear and your fish parasite-free. It takes a larger, more powerful unit to kill parasites than it does to simply kill algae spores. They are a good investment for an outdoor pond, essential if you are keeping very expensive koi.

UV sterilizers would be a good investment for a fish-only marine aquarium but they are one of those "iffy" investments for a reef tank. Sort of in the same category as ozonizers. They have advantages and disadvantages. The obvious disadvantage is that they would kill everything that passes through the water column through their tube, assuming they are properly sized to do the job. I don't think you really need to invest in UV sterilization or ozone for the average sized reef tank. However, if you are setting up a really large system and want the lowest possible chance of problem parasites or disease, then this would be something to consider.

I have an Aqua UV on my tank- the one with the built in wiper and it has been working great. Their tech support is super and the product is second to none. They are more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
