Gushing overflow? need a fix please

    Hey Everyone!

I broke down today & bought a 125g tank to replace my 75 reef

The tank is an AGA with a mega overflow drilled in the bottom of the tank. All is up & running but my problem is the water is gushing out of the overflow hose to my sump. I am using the flexible 1'' hose that is was using for my old external overflow on the 75.

The water seems to be flowing just fine down into the overflow but every 5 seconds or so...water gushes out of the hose that is laying in my sump. It really makes a loud bubbling noise and is annoying as hell. Did I hook it up incorrectly?

I've never had a drilled tank before & am unsure. There are 2 1'' holes drilled at the bottom of the overflow box. I have the 3' hose connected to one and a Mag 9.5 connected to the other for my return. I have tried cranking down the return a bit but that doesnt seem to help.

What am I doing wrong here?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Air in the intake...

It sounds like you are drawing in excessive air in the intake. Take a look at this website. This modification will probally help fix your problem.

Could be that you are generating too much backpressure too - "water gushes out of the hose that is laying in my sump" - you may need to shorten up that hose so that it enters the sump almost vertically, and only an inch or three below the normal water level in the sump. Check of the piece on Durso's site where he talks about "flushing".

You can order them from Richard Durso if you choose, I don't think they are very expensive. They really do the trick in quieting down the noise.

What size do you need it to be I will make you one and mail it to ya if Ya want me to. tell me diameter and how tall you need it and Ill get on it in the next cpl days. I might add the website from aga should have some suggestions for you also. With the standard one from aga I have not seen a problem other than like was mentioned above with the return too far under the water. May also wanna try to limit the air it is taking in thru the top hole too with a gang valve or a shut off valve maybe.

    Lightbulb

The Durso fix will solve this problem! I just did it on my AGA 150, man it is huge differance... Anyway, if you bought your aquarium brand new it should have come with a version of the Durso standpipe made by AllGlass. If not, you can also purschase the from your LFS or through the internet. I think I bought mine from my LFS for $12 each. Can't beat that price for what it does.

    Good luck!
