I would highly recommend getting a couple books and read, read & read some more. A good RO/DI unit will run anywhere from 2-300 bucks

The information in books you can find in the library on saltwater aquariums is probably out of date, unless of course you can find some of the recently published books.

We recommend some books on our site:

The TDS (total dissolved solids) of your tap water will tell you if you need a RO unit or not. I'm not sur ehow you tested your tap for nitrates but if it is that high then yes, you should purchase a 4 stage RO/DI unit.

Definately Geta SKIMMER and good live rock.... that is the easiest way to go. Remora pro and CPR bakpak are good skimmers for not a ton of cash. And as far as a RO/DI unit you can alway buy water from a grocery store for a while, I bought 2 5 gallon jugs and used them till I bought the RO unit....

I personally do a 10% water change weekly. I think most people do 15-20% bi-weekly. There are those that do monthly changes and even those that have never done water changes. (These are people that are running very high tech equipment)

I picked up my RO/DI unit off ebay from seller ID filterdirect... he should have many more for sale and they're good quality units and awesome price at that... got mine which was a 6-stage w/ 3 gallon storage tank for around $150 shipped.... my tap water TDS reading is around 170-190 and after it runs thru the unit it's around 15-20 after the RO output and consistantly 0 after the D/I output....

Dave,

I HIGHLY recommend RO/DI. I had nothing but problems with my tank until I started using one. Check eBay they have quite a few in a wide range of prices. They are VERY easy to setup. Just My Opinion.
