over foaming

I have recently added a Euroreef ES5-2 skimmer to my 55 gallon at first it worked perfect, but after a couple hours it started foaming over even at the lowest setting. What would make it do this?

Let it run it's course it will level off after it has cycled all the water in the tank a few times. If it keeps doing this after a day or two try raising the skimmer to change the level of water in it

The skimmer has been running since thursday afternoon. I was told by someone at marine depot that I may need to install some sort of control valve to restrict the amount of air that the venturi recieves. Ever heard of such a thing on a brand new skimmer?

most of the time to amount of water flowing to the skimmer itself may help it to slowdown the amount of foam try to reduce the water going into the skimmer first.

You didn't add anything to the tank did you. Maybe epoxy down a few corals?

Nope I haven't added anything but ro top off water.

If you have used some epoxy to glue down some corals would that cause the skimmer to over foam? I have tried new pumps and nothing is working. I have a ASM G2 and sorta lost so is my local vendor.

Hi SpeedFreak, Welcome to Reefland!

The use of epoxy can definitely cause a skimmer to over-foam for a day or two; if you use epoxy or super glue and notice the skimmer starting to act-up, it is typically the cause.

So is it best to turn off the skimmer for a few days or let it continue to run till it stops over-foaming?

It's literally plug and play!! Unpack it, put it in the sump and plug it in. On the hobby models (which are all but a few of the largest ones) there are no valves, no screws no nothing!! A simple adjustable riser pipe makes "dialing up" a foam level a snap! Want wet foam because you just cleaned the algae off the glass?? Raise the pipe up a bit.. Adding new water, food, live rock, resins etc., which often make a protein skimmer go nuts!!?? Just lower the pipe a bit.... THAT'S IT!!
