Remora vs Urchin

well its been awhile but im back
ive moved my 55g 3 times in 4 years and here i am for now
i still have soft corals and a few fish

i will have to move it again eventually so...
im debating on where to go with my setup
Im not sure whether to go with a in sump or hanging skimmer to replace my current one
i currently have very lo phosphate and nitrates

would a REMORA or UNCHIN be more beneficial??

could i set up the remora on the sump tank in the cabinet below if it is better than the urchin??
.. how high must the water level be for the hang on to operate??

i have a ten gallon sump below my tank
i want to put a LSB into it since it would be easier to move than if i had the sand bed in the tank and since its summer i will get a SB seed (detrivore)kit from IPSF

i want to get a 10 and glue in the baffles and have the LSB and skimmer and rock i have in there

what are the pros and cons?

thanks!

The skimmer performance is no different between a Remora and an Urchin; the advantage of the Urchin is it is In-Sump and does not add equipment into the display. You also will not have to worry about bubbles.

Sorry to dredge up an old post, but this one is really on-point.

I'm thinking about getting an Urchin, but it will have to fit inside my existing wet/dry sump, right next to my return pump. Will I have problems with bubbles getting sucked into the return and then into the tank with this setup? I see that Scott says no, but I'm not sure if he's talking about putting the urchin in a sump with baffles between the skimmer and return pump or not. Mine won't have any baffles, so...

Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have any problem if you don't have a bubble problem now. The Urchin has a side discharge and should work well for you.

One note place the intake of the pump as close to the incoming water from the tank above as possible. It will increase the perfomance of the skimmer. Protiens tend to collect on the surface of the water and these are picked up by the overflow box.

HTH,
Kevin
